Salem, New Hampshire is the "Gateway to New Hampshire". Just over the Massachusetts border, the town sits conveniently along Interstate 93, less than an hour's drive from the culture and excitement of Boston and the beauty and tranquility of New Hampshire's White Mountains, Lakes Region and Atlantic Ocean coast.

Originally settled in 1652, the community was originally known as the North Parish of Methuen, Massachusetts. After a boundary dispute between the New Hampshire and Massachusetts Bay colonies was settled, the community was renamed in honor of nearby Salem, Massachusetts. Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth incorporated the town of Salem in 1750.

In 1902, the Massachusetts Northeast Street Railway Company established Canobie Lake Park near the town's western border to encourage leisure excursions on its trolleys. While the popularity of the trolley went into decline shortly thereafter, Canobie Lake Park remains a hugely popular amusement park, consistently drawing large crowds in the warmer months. Other popular attractions include Rockingham Park, which features the oldest horse race track in New England, the geological oddity known as "America's Stonehenge" and the Mall at Rockingham Park.

Now a major bedroom community for the nearby cities of Manchester, Nashua, Boston and Haverhill, the town has enjoyed continued residential and business growth throughout recent decades, with an expansive retail district situated along Route 28. The town's municipal services are second to none - a modern water and sewer system, highly skilled police, fire and ambulance personnel and a town government managed by trained, professional officials. Salem also boasts an award-winning public school system, and one of the finest local libraries in New England.

Residential areas offer housing options from apartments to high-end custom built houses, with the majority being middle income single family homes. Thanks to the town's large industrial base, property taxes are among the lowest in southern New Hampshire.
